I was a bit lost at first, but found it made me feel just like the characters whose world was fairly rapidly thrown for a loop. As with the other two books I've read of Mr. Preston (Joe Coffin series!) I very much so enjoyed his ability to paint a scene in such a way with his words that I was able to "watch" things unfold in my imagination as the pages flipped by. Looking forward to reading book 2 when it's available. In the mean time, Caxton Tempest is doing a good job of holding my attention :)Product details

Daniel has a lot of trouble on his hands. He has to out run his "bodyguard"--a bullying security guard named Reston who likes to hurt Daniel as he "takes care of him" for Daniel's father. Daniel is still mourning his mother's death, but Daniel's father has thrown himself into his work as a coping mechanism. Neither Daniel nor his father give up until they get somewhere.
Daniel's father is working for the government on a top secret project--Daniel rarely sees him anymore. All he knows is that the project is named "Project Wormhole". Daniel's father has a breakthrough. Suddenly, the entire world changes--and Daniel is not just running from Reston anymore.
Daniel is now running away from Dinosaurs, who appear to have destroyed London's entire population. The only survivors he finds are two other
kids who were suddenly "zapped" while at a field trip to a museum with dinosaur bones.
The three kids are going to have to work together and think fast if they are to survive this nightmare? Does humanity still exist somewhere?
This book is a lot of fun. I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys tales about survival in the United Kingdom. The main characters are sympathetic and easy to root for--the dinosaurs are terrifying, as are some of the few survivors the kids have to escape from. The book is a fun adventure series--I cannot wait to see what happens to these kids next.
If "Jurassic Park" moved to Birmingham, England, and then was thrown a couple of decades into the future a la "Planet of the Apes", we would have an adventure story such as Project Wormhole, a young adult time travel story from the writing talent that is Ken Preston. I generally don't enjoy the majority of young adult works, especially when they focus on the angsty, hormonal-driven issues that many teenagers seem mired in these days. This book, however, although clearly written for a younger audience and starring three teenagers, kept my interest throughout and was not marred by any overly dramatic teenaged crap. Instead, Wil, Daniel, and Lee were too busy literally running for their lives from dinosaurs or scavenging from a changed Birmingham landscape in order to survive into the next day.
I loved the first half of the book, which introduces our three main characters Daniel, who's the neglected son of a research scientist who may have caused this entire time travel disaster; Lee, an American exchange student who learned her survival skills from her Marine dad; and Will, a bespeckled and bullied kid who befriends Lee in the library before the s*** hits the fan. In particular, I enjoyed these three youngsters and their story when they were on their own, struggling to make the right decisions in a crazy landscape. Once they met up with other survivors and started learning about the farming aspects of certain dinosaurs, I kinda sorta lost interest. (I guess if I ever was to go back in time, or forward, or ...whatever...I would rather be a hunter-gatherer than a farmer. More mobility, more uncertainty, more action. Until the velociraptor comes knocking for your dino-cow.)
I digress. Awesome book. Read it. Give a copy to your tweens and have them read it, too. It's fun and it's a good read.
I love the premise of this new series from the creator of the Joe Coffin vampire-killer books dinosaurs in present day, with the three protagonists leaping (through unknown time-travel means) twenty-two years into the future, twenty-two years after the prehistoric lizards initially return (again through as yet unexplained space-time continuum meddling). Quite ingenious. Preston doesn’t bore with a slow build-up as to how and why this happens. From the first handful of pages the action begins, events occur, Birmingham (UK, as Preston readers should expect) is reduced to derelict, overgrown jungle, replete with hungry dinosaurs large and small and flying. The possibly-once were-lizard stand-bys are here T-Rex and velociraptors, along with some less known dino-kin. The three human leads, Daniel, Will, and Lee, are teens, not surprisingly, quite unprepared for the dinopocalypse. They are somewhat social misfits (they are teenagers) but thankfully Preston writes them with a measured hand, avoiding the annoying teen stereotypes. Being introverts, we are spared the cocky, brash, grating teens of the Anakin-type. Preston’s setting is fun (jungle in the UK, what’s not to love), his premise is awesome (multiple time-travel arcs, dinosaurs, civilization in ruins), and his characters are likable (potentially empathetic if the reader was a social introvert with less the doting parents). In fact, this is a fun, awesome, likable read all the way around. A rather extreme departure from Joe Coffin, but Preston’s talented enough to pull it off. But then again, I understand Preston writes romances, so he's obviously a diverse talent.
